Coat Types in Malamutes
Makuyi has a correct coat. The outer guard
hairs are coarse and stand off the undercoat. The undercoat is dense but does not matt. |
This is Makuyi's brother Magnus.
Although is is very handsome, he has what is called a "long coat". The outer guard hairs are long and silky and not as effective for insulation. He does have a nice undercoat though. |

This fuzzy guy has the coat known
as "wooly" and the name is self explanatory. Jake has long guard hairs and his undercoat is thick just like lambs wool. It matts very easily and this coat type takes alot of daily grooming. Jake came into rescue badly matted, so he had to be shaved down to the skin. In the picture on the right you can see the wooly undercoat coming in and the way snow balls up and sticks to it. Even though it's thick a wooly coat it will not properly insulate a Mal. |
